Can I fake USB device registration?

I am working on a twain data source that gets images over TCP. It looks like the only way to have a device recognized by the Image Capture routines is to be registered as a USB or Firewire device. Is there a way to register a fake device? Any other way to have the image capture routines recognize us? This seems like a pretty big architectural flaw in IC.
