I have talked to them, and they have been very helpful; they have
information on how to communicate directly with the powermate if I were to
write my own driver, and they informed me that they have used the knob
successfully with HID on windows, which is promising. However, they have
not tried to access it using HID on the mac, so they couldn't provide any
information about what I describe here. Of course, I'd like to use HID if
it all possible rather than write my own driver...
